First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

Michael Schumacher gave his competition a lot to think about when he set the fastest time of the session in the new Ferrari F2002 over a second ahead of his brother Ralf Schumacher in the Williams. Giancarlo Fisichella was third ahead of the two Saubers of Nick Heidfeld and Felipe Massa and the Arrows of Enrique Bernoldi.
Jenson Button continues his good form setting the 7th fastest lap ahead of Takuma Sato, Juan Pablo Montoya and Heinz Harald Frentzen.

The session saw a number of drivers caught out by the dirty track with Kimi Raikkonen, Rubens Barrichello, Alex Yoong and Takuma Sato all spinning and stalling losing valuable running time. Other drivers including Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard also spun but managed to recover.
The session had to be stopped as a result of Kimi Raikkonen's car stuck with the marshals struggling to move it to a safe place.

Takuma Sato, Allan McNish and Mark Webber all covered the most number of laps with 23 as they try to get familiar with the track. Ralf Schumacher covered 22 while Jacques Villeneuve and Juan Pablo Montoya managed 21 laps.
Rubens Barrichello just managed 3 laps while Kimi Raikkonen only did 4 laps. Michael Schumacher did 10 laps and Mika Salo covered 11. All other drivers covered between 13 and 20 laps.

While the Friday practice times can often be misleading as teams run different programs, it seems clear at this stage that the new Ferrari is fast with Williams a bit behind while McLaren have a lot of work to do if they want to stay in the top 3.
