First Friday Practice Session Report - Results

The McLaren's appear unstoppable here at the Nurburgring following the results of the 1st practice. David Coulthard set a time under the 1:17 mark (the pole time he set last year was a 1:17.529!!) and this is only the first of four sessions before qualifying even begins. Mika Hakkinen was close behind with a time of 1:17.022. Michael Schumacher was third but a massive 0.879 seconds off the pace with Barrichello in 4th over a second behind.
Following the top 4, Trulli is the best of the rest but with a time in the high 1:18's and 1.867 seconds off the pace. Kimi Raikkonen continues his impressive form setting the 6th fastest time ahead of Panis and Villeneuve. Heidfeld is 9th ahead of Ralf Schumacher in 10th who appears to be struggling with his Michelin tyres.
Of the other drivers, Alesi is worth mentioning in 11th ahead of Montoya. Frentzen is in 13th place and over a second off the pace of his team-mate, perhaps he is not 100% yet.
Eddie Irvine didn't clock a time this session as his car failed him on the installation lap while Tarso Marques had mechanical trouble during the session and didn't set a time.
There were no major incidents throughout the session although several drivers had trips across the gravel but they all managed to recover.

Pedro de la Rosa covered the most number of laps with 26 followed by Luciano Burti with 24 and Jean Alesi and Olivier Panis with 23. Eddie Irvine and Tarso Marques didn't cover any laps while Verstappen only managed 8 laps while Fisichella did only 11 laps. Most other drivers covered between 13 and 21 laps.

It will be interesting to see how Ferrari are going to close the massive gap to McLaren and whether Williams will catch up once the track gets warmer.
