Second Friday Practice Session Report - Results

The fight for the top of the timesheets continued in the second session but it was between David Coulthard and his team-mate Mika Hakkinen as Michael Schumacher ran into trouble and lost a lot of time while his mechanics worked on his car.
Mika Hakkinen's fastest time was stunning. He was almost 0.8 seconds faster than Pole time of last year and 0.4 seconds ahead of David Coulthard. The surprise of the session was  Eddie Irvine in 3rd and while he was over 0.8 seconds off the pace, this demonstrates that their new aerodynamic package is actually a big improvement. Rubens Barrichello was 4th ahead of a much improved Montoya with Ralf Schumacher in 6th place. Heidfeld, Trulli, Frentzen and Panis make the top 10 while Michael Schumacher failed to improve on his time from the 1st session and is back in 11th place.

Jean Alesi was in 12th place showing a big improvement in the Prost although his team-mate Burti was back in 18th while Fisichella also showing some improvement for Benetton in 15th place but again his team-mate Jenson Button is back in 21st place.
It appears that the new aerodynamic packages that Jaguar, Prost and Benetton have introduced are favouring their top drivers but it is in qualifying that we can get a better picture.

Heinz Harald Frentzen had a big crash just at the end of the session but was OK. Several drivers spun during the session but managed to keep going.

Jarno Trulli covered the most number of laps this session with 28 followed by Barrichello, Panis and Fisichella with 26 laps each. Jacques Villeneuve didn't go back out after his crash this morning while Tarso Marques only managed another 3 laps this session to add to the 3 he covered this morning!. Jenson Button only managed 10 laps as his engine blew towards the end of the session while Enrique Bernoldi only managed 14 laps. Most drivers covered between 15 and 25 laps.

Overall it was Juan Pablo Montoya who covered the most number of laps today with 49 ahead of Jarno Trulli with 48 and Olivier Panis with 47.

The pole time of last year had already been smashed. Are we going to see a sub 1:17 lap time in qualifying tomorrow ?
