First Practice Session:

Mika Hakkinen sets the fastest time of the session ahead of Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher. Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

The top 2 times are already faster than the pole position time set here last year. The reason times have dropped since yesterday is mainly due to the drop in temperature and the track has more grip today. The times are extremely close with just 0.2 seconds separating the top 3. 1 second separates the top 10 and 2 seconds separate the top 20 !

Disappointment for David Coulthard who suffered problems with his McLaren that prevented him from setting a timed lap all session. Relief for Ralf Schumacher who appears to be handling his injury well as he clocked the 5th fastest time.

The session started with most drivers going out immediately on the installation lap with Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve the last to go out.

7 minutes into the session and both Minardi's are the first to set a timed lap followed by Eddie Irvine.

10 minutes into the session and it is Jos Verstappen (1:21.441) from Rubens Barrichello and Johnny Herbert. Irvine, de la Rosa and Zonta make the top 6. Most drivers are out on the track. Michael Schumacher spins but recovers. Ralf Schumacher finally sets a competitive time jumping to 3rd.

20 minutes into the session and it is Mika Hakkinen (1:19.442) from Johnny Herbert and Eddie Irvine. Jacques Villeneuve is 4th followed by Giancarlo Fisichella and Michael Schumacher. David Coulthard has yet to set a time.

30 minutes into the session and Mika Hakkinen is still fastest ahead of Michael Schumacher and Heinz Harald Frentzen. Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher and Johnny Herbert make the top 6. David Coulthard has yet to set a time.

10 minutes to go in this 45 minutes session and Rubens Barrichello goes fastest ahead of Mika Hakkinen and Michael Schumacher. There are a few rain drops but it not affecting the lap times.

In the final minutes of the session Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello trade fastest laps but it was Mika Hakkinen who regained the top position in the last minute. Meanwhile his teammate David Coulthard did not set a single timed lap.

Final Order: Mika Hakkinen, Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher. Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve make the top 6.

Rubens Barrichello is not far behind while Mika Hakkinen is in 4th position just under 0.5 seconds behind. Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher make the top 6.

The top 3 are the only drivers to set a time under 1:19 and David Coulthard's time is over 0.6 seconds faster than the pole position time set here last year.

Several drivers did not improve on their times from the first session including Mika Hakkinen, Ralf Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve.

Ricardo Zonta was the first out on the track followed by Jarno Trulli and David Coulthard.
