I think Michael and Ross will have had by now an interesting discussion with the head Bridgestone man and that Michael's lovely red machine will take the pole AND the race. I also think that the new car is rather too delicate for Rubens' touch and don't expect him to do better than 6th or 7th. Who will be showing him their flashing red lights? Both Macs and Fernando and, I think, Juan Pablo --assuming he keeps the car together. (He does seem, lately, to have begun caressing it rather more than kicking and whipping it around the corners!) I expect Ralph and Olivier Panis to round out the points makers.
I know you don't expect Fernando on the podium, but I've been VERY impressed by his driving this year. If you throw out Australia and Austria, he's not done worse than p.5 and he has two p.3's and one p.2! And last week he had the fastest lap in the race (the only guy to manage this this year other than Michael, Rubens & Kimi!)
I agree with you about his capacity to manage his race as well as his race-car. They may call Kimi "iceman," but Fernando shows that Spaniards are not necessarily emotional. I wonder, really, if Michael could do any better with the Renault than he's done?
I also agree with you about the puzzling record of Jarno in the (presumably) same equipment. I also think Mark Webber, like Olivier and Giancarlo Fisichella, is a wonderful driver. Now if he can just get lucky, too.
However the race (and the season) itself plays out, it is a great joy for me to see the drivers becoming the real focus of attention. I can't speak for either Ron or Sir Frank, but I'll bet either one of them would rather have Fernando on board than more new wrinkles from the engineers (both chassis and engine)!!
Thanks for your analysis: spot on as usual  - Jim W - USA (Reference Heretic 5-10 - What is there to say?)

The Heretic replies:

Hi Jim,

Well, by now I think that Michael may be suggesting that some of the Bridgestone developers start by inserting a tyre or two somewhere in their anatomy.

As it turned out Michael was not going to even hang on to that second place – a dreadful finish for the team.

I am equally impressed with Alonso but I still feel that he does not have the car. When he does it will be a different story and it is only a matter of time.

I am now also starting to feel that Jaguar (as well as Toyota) are starting to make progress – possibly too late for this season or maybe even 2004 but we will see Webber with a good car.
