Referred to as the “Racing Capital of the World,” Indianapolis hosts the two largest single-day sporting events in the world: the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400 and the largest Formula One race in the world, the United States Grand Prix. All held at the famed oval of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, each race draws crowds from across the globe.
The Indianapolis 500 is a race held annually over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the oldest surviving auto racing track in the world, having existed since 1908. The original surface was crushed stone and tar, and when the first race took place in August, 1909, several drivers were killed because of the uneven surface. This eventually led to the surface being paved with 3.2 million bricks, and gave the track its popular nickname, "The Brickyard." It has a spectator capacity of over 300,000, the largest sporting facility in the United States.

The track, a flat two and a half mile oval, almost rectangular in nature, hosted the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911.
