European GP - 1st Friday Practice Session

Final Order: Rubens Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Nick Heidfeld, Allan McNish, Felipe Massa and David Coulthard make the top 6.
Frentzen, Fisichella, Salo, Montoya, Panis, Trulli, Sato, R Schumacher, Button, Raikkonen, Villeneuve, Bernoldi, de la Rosa, Irvine, Webber and Yoong make the rest of the field.

60 min: Final lap! ... no improvements at the top.

59 min: Olivier Panis moves into 11th place while McNish takes 4th surely on a low fuel load.

58 min: Due the lengthening of the track, we cannot compare the times set this weekend with last year's.

57 min: Jacques Villeneuve improves slightly into 17th place!

56 min: Nick Heidfeld takes 3rd from his tem-mate with a time of 1:34.924. Still over a second behind the Ferraris.

55 min: 5 minutes remain in the session and the 2 Ferraris are in a class of their own at this stage over a second faster than any other!

53 min: Villeneuve improves his time and is now in 20th!!

52 min: It seems to be a fight between the 2 Ferraris this weekend. Barrichello tops the timesheets with a 1:33.665.

51 min: Rubens Barrichello on a flyer!

50 min: Eddie Irvine has improved into 18th. The Jaguars continue to run at the back hoping for their new aero package to move them up the grid in time for Silverstone in 2 weeks time.

48 min: Takuma Sato has stopped on the track with a problem! 

47 min: Allan McNish jumps into 6th on what appears to be a light fuel load!

46 min: Indeed he does it with a time of 1:33.910. That is just 0.064 seconds faster than his team-mate!

45 min: Michael Schumacher on a flyer and could top the timesheets on this lap!

44 min: Felipe Massa takes 3rd with a time of 1:34.982. Only the Ferraris are faster!

43 min: Olivier Panis improves with a time of 1:36.664. Massa on a flyer!

42 min: Michael Schumacher is back on the track. Can he better Barrichello's time this session.

41 min: Jenson Button takes 10th with a time of 1:36.520.

40 min: Top 10 - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Coulthard, Heidfeld, Trulli, Montoya, Fisichella, R Schumacher, Massa and Raikkonen.

39 min: Jarno Trulli has covered the most number of laps so far with 14. Yet his best time was on his first flyer!

38 min: Giancarlo Fisichella moves back to 7th with a time of 1:36.286.

37 min: Kimi Raikkonen has improved to 9th with a 1:36.734

36 min: Bernoldi spins again and this time he doesn't get away with it as hits the barriers. Session over for him. He was 12th fastest.

35 min: Mark Webber continues to impress. He is 18th fastest ahead of Villeneuve, de la Rosa, Irvine and his team-mate Yoong. One must wonder why he's interesting in testing for Jaguar next week!

34 min: Kimi Raikkonen is down in 11th at this stage after completing 6 laps.

33 min: At this stage, the Ferraris are so much faster than anyone else. They are almost a second faster than the McLaren of Coulthard and the Sauber of Heidfeld and almost 2 seconds faster than the rest!

32 min: Top 10 - Barrichello, M Schumacher, Coulthard, Heidfeld, Trulli, Montoya, Massa, R Schumacher, Panis, Fisichella.

31 min: And Michael Schumacher improves but remains in second with a time of 1:34.093.

30 min: Olivier Panis moves into 9th with a time of 1:36.875 just ahead of Fisichella. Michael Schumacher on another flyer.

29 min: Kimi Raikkonen finally starts his first flyer. All other drivers have set lap times.

28 min: Rubens Barrichello retakes the top spot with a time of 1:33.974. The Brazilian must be in an excellent mood after Brazil beat England in the World Cup earlier today!

27 min: David Coulthard moves into 3rd with a time of 1:35.021. He is 0.761 off the pace of Michael at this stage.

26 min: Michael Schumacher betters his team-mate with a 1:34.260!

25 min: Barrichello goes straight to the top with a time of 1:34.615. That is over 1.4 seconds faster than Trulli! Michael Schumacher on track.

24 min: Barrichello on a flyer and he is superfast! 

23 min: Giancarlo Fisichella moves into 7th place with a time of 1:37.484. He is the leading Honda runner. Sato is in 9th, Panis in 12th and Villeneuve in 15th! 

22 min: Only the Ferraris and the McLarens have yet to set a time. Fisichella on a flyer! 

21 min: Juan Pablo Montoya moves into second just 0.061 seconds behind Trulli. 

20 min: Nick Heidfeld takes second from his team-mate. Montoya starts his first flyer! 

19 min: Jenson Button in the second Renault moves into 9th. Bernoldi spins but recovers. 

18 min: While it is too early, Trulli's time is just under half a second faster than anyone else. Renault were confident this track will suit them. 

17 min: Felipe Massa moves into second with a time of 1:36.525. 

16 min: Top 10 - Trulli, R Schumacher, Bernoldi, Heidfeld, Massa, Salo, Sato, McNish, Frentzen and Panis. 

15 min: Ralf Schumacher goes fastest only for Jarno Trulli to go better with a time of 1:36.054. 

14 min: Takuma Sato goes 3rd with a time of 1:38.087. More drivers are on the track. 

13 min: Enrique Bernoldi goes fastest with a time of 1:37.626 with Mika Salo in second with a 1:37.828. 

12 min: Alex Yoong sets a 1:45.965, the first time of the day. 

11 min: Enrique Bernoldi and Olivier Panis also join the action. This will be a busier session than usual as the drivers checkout the new track modifications. 

10 min: Alex Yoong starts a flying lap as Allan McNish and Takuma Sato return to the track. 

9 min: Alex Yoong is back out on the track. 

8 min: Rubens Barrichello also stayed out for 2 laps before pitting. 

7 min: Michael Schumacher pits at the end of his second lap.  

6 min: Michael Schumacher continues for a second lap. He wants to check out the first corner at a higher speed. He may pit this lap though. 

5 min: And Rubens Barrichello follows him out. 

4 min: Michael Schumacher goes out in his installation lap. Villeneuve returns to the pits after his installation lap. 

2 min: Only the 2 Ferraris have yet to go out on their installation lap while the first drivers out have now returned to the pits. 

1 min: The drivers are getting a feel of the first right hander. 

Session underway and a number of cars head out on their installation lap with Jordan's Takuma Sato in the lead!

The track here at the Nurburgring has been modified heavily around the first corner with a tight right hander followed by 2 left handers before another sharp right hander. Overall, the track has been lengthened by over 500 meters and the number of laps have dropped to 60 for the race. Teams and drivers will be keen to see how these changes will affect their cars. Session starting in 5 minutes
